Blowing bubbles with a straw
Although pretty much all kids like it, most of them are not allowed to blow bubbles using a straw while drinking. So why not let them have a play session where blowing bubbles is ok. They will have lots of fun and maybe not do it anymore during dinner time!
Age
From 2 years
What you need
Water
Bubble solution or dish detergent
Food colouring
A few plastic cups
Straw
Preparation
Fill a few cups with water and add a drop of different food colouring and bubble solution to each of it. Put the cups on a table together with a straw. Sitting at the table doing this activity will keep the mess to a minimum. Food colouring can leave some stains behind so cover up the areas that you don’t want to get stained.
Play
This activity is very easy, just let them blow bubbles using the straw. If your child does not know yet how to blow bubbles, show it to them. Do make sure they don’t drink the liquid.
Let them run the show, they can touch the bubbles and try see how high the bubbles can get. You could add some spoons or cups to the play, maybe even pretend you are making cocktails. Or how about blowing bubbles using multiple straws or try to blow bubbles in two cups at the same time? The fun is only limited by you and your kid’s imagination.
Add-ons for more fun play
There is only minimal clean up required when finished with this activity. Just wash off the few cups and straws that you have used and clean the table.
Educational
This exercise lets kids learn about the principle of cause and effect; when I blow, bubbles appear!

Add-ons for more fun play
- If you are doing this with more than one kid let them have a competition which one can blow the biggest pile of bubbles.
- Gently put some paper on the bubbles. When lifting it again you can see it left a print. You can repeat this to cover the entire paper. It creates very cool artwork.
- Now that you have a bubble liquid you could also try to blow the bubbles in the air.
