Pizza
Cooking with kids is fun, educational and (hopefully) yummy. Most kids that get to be involved in making their dinner, do well at eating it too. One of the easiest things to start with is making a pizza together. You don't need to use the stove, so don't have to be afraid of the kids getting burnt. This makes it a great activity for young kids too. And who doesn't like pizza!
Age
From 2 years
What you need
Pizza base (home made or store bought)
Tomato sauce
Grated cheese
Italian herbs seasoning
Toppings; mozzarella cheese, ham, pineapple, mushrooms, tomato, capsicum, onion and anything else you like.
Preparation
Get all the ingredients ready, chop them up into small pieces if necessary. Put them into different cups, so it will be easy for the kids to decorate the pizza. Check how to prepare your pizza base and preheat the oven accordingly.
Play
Start to spread the tomato sauce over the pizza until it is completely covered. Then put on all the ingredients to your liking. Sprinkle over some grated cheese and Italian herbs to finish it off.
Put the pizza in the oven. For how long will depend on the base you have used and how high your oven is set to. On average it is around 15 minutes, but check in between. When the cheese is melted normally is a good indication that the pizza is ready to be served. Boun Appetito!
Add-ons for more fun play
A tidy and clean kitchen is essential for staying healthy. You don't want to spread any germs when cooking. So when you prepare food, keep the kitchen hygiene top of mind. After you have enjoyed the pizza's, do the washing up together.
Educational
When making a pizza talk to your kids about all the ingredients you are using. Ask them if they know where they come from i.e different countries and how they grow i.e on a tree or in the ground.
Or teach them about the variety of tastes and flavours there are. The five basic tastes are; sweet, sour, bitter, salty and savoury. Let them taste everything, raw and cooked. See if your kids can categorise the taste of an ingredient into one of the five basic tastes.

- Don't have a pizza base? Use a tortilla wrap or pita bread instead.
- Make funny face pizza's. Rocket could be hair, a mushroom would make a great nose, tomato slices could be eyes and a slice of capsicum could be a mouth. Let the creativity burst in.
- Dress up as a real chef with a chef's hat and an apron. Also a good way to protect your children's clothes from getting stains on it.
