Day trip to Ayutthaya - Thailand
If you have some time to kill when you are in Bangkok, consider taking a trip to Ayutthaya. It is only a bit more than an hour by car. We took a private taxi to get there. This was most convenient for us travelling with 2 small kids. You have the most flexibility and can go where and when you want it.
Ayutthaya is an old historic city, once the 2nd largest Siamese capital until it was destroyed by the Burmese in the 18th century. There are many ruins to go and see, most were once palaces and temples. It is now World Heritage property and one can only imagine what it must have looked like year ago. We saw Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, Ayutthaya Elephant Village and Wat Mahathat.
